Jumping on the Bandwagon

I see them everywhere lately.  Blogs.  It seems like its the "cool" thing to do these days.  If you don't have a blog then you aren't in touch with the 21st Century.  Its kind of like if you don't have a Facebook.  People look at you like you are some sort of leper.  Not that I myself get these looks, but I often see people giving them to my husband because he is not connected with the Facebook world.

"What?!  You don't have a Facebook account?"  They say.  "How do you know what's going on with your friends?"

Hearing this time and time again, it's started to make me think about it.  Isn't it sad that we look at it that way?  If you aren't on Facebook then you don't know what's going on in the lives of those around you?  Have we become so disconnected personally that we have to rely on a social networking site to "keep up" with everyone?  Sadly, I think yes.  Which has brought me to my latest ponder.  Should I delete my Facebook account?  A part of me wants to just out of principle.  The other part is terrified that we will be completely disconnected from the world.  But then again, it will show me who the important people in our lives are and who are just cyber-friends.

Just the other day a friend of mine sent me a homemade card in the mail.  She too was expressing her thoughts on the Facebook subject and how it changes the way we interact with one another.  She had given up Facebook for Lent and was finding it difficult to stay in touch with people.  The thought of that made her sad so she decided to do something about it - Send out some good ole' snail mail.  I have to tell you, receiving her card made my day.  It was so nice to get something in the mail that just said, "I'm thinking about you and wanted to say hi".  I would love to say that I too will start sending out cards "just because" but I know better.  It has never been my strong suit.  I always have good intentions but then I never actually mail the cards.  Kind of the most important step in the process.  Meh, I guess I will try to do better on that front.

Until then, to delete, or keep?  I guess you'll find out soon enough.

  1. Keep it. You don't have to check it but it's nice to know could if you wanted to. Plus, someday, you may want to share some trivial snipit with the world without mucking up your blog. Facebook is good for that. :-)

Welcome to the blogosphere. I am happy to have you on board. You've been added to my Reader list under the "important people" section. ;-) Happy writing (which I hope you are doing with Windows Live Writer. If not, give me a call and I will give you the lowdown.) Hugs!
